“Time management” is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter, so that you get more done in less time. Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress.

Benefits of good time management:

  1. Greater productivity and efficiency.
  2. A better professional reputation.
  3. Less stress.
  4. Increased opportunities for advancement.
  5. Greater opportunities to achieve important life and career goals.

Thanks to a better time management we will be able to utilize our time to maximize our productivity and success. I’ve struggled a bit when figuring out how to manage my time but thanks to some tips I have read and also developed by myself, I have been improving and being more efficient.

Put a time limit on task: Limiting tasks by time is a pretty normal activity when being involved on software development. We are used to give to certain task an estimation of the time we think it will take to be accomplished. Applying this to any other task we need to finish, help us to concentrate on that specific assignment and work more efficiently.

Create a daily plan: First things in the mornings, always recommended to plan out your day. Review which tasks need to accomplished by the end of the day. This provides a boost in motivation and productivity.

Prioritize your tasks: Not all tasks have the same priority as others. The process of prioritizing our tasks helps us to decide which are required to be completed first , which ones take more time than others and how critical they are. Prioritizing our work helps us avoid missing deadlines and improves our work quality.

Block out distractions: Distractions only put us on a really inefficient work flow. Directing all of our attention to a task we are working on stimulates greater productivity and efficiency, helping tackle down tasks faster and with a much better quality.

Focus on your current task: For a person like me, multitasking gets really difficult. My way of working is finishing one job before moving onto another. I find really distracting, tiring and stressing when working on two or more tasks at the same time. I find really easy to get distracted by external things, can’t concentrate on any of the tasks.

Sleep well: For a really long time I dismissed the true powers of a good sleep schedule until I tried it. Getting enough and quality rest really boost our mentality and our body for a good work day.

Good time management can make our days at work 100% better by just tweaking some things but also, lets remember this is a process we work on everyday, improving little by little. As soon as we begin to manage our time better, we will start to notice it’s benefits.
